Dear Friends of Catholic Charities,
I write to express my strong support for the mission and the work of Catholic Charities in our diocese. The exercise of charity is an essential part of the mission of the Catholic Church since its beginning. In the Acts of the Apostles, we read: “All who believed were together and had all things in common; and they sold their possessions and goods and distributed them to all, as any had need” (Acts 2:44-45).
Since the ministry of charity is an essential responsibility of the Church, the work of Catholic Charities is of great importance for our diocese. I encourage your spiritual and material support of Catholic Charities as a response to Our Lord’s command to “love one another” as He has loved us. Our faith inspires us to spread God’s love and to bear witness to His love, especially through service of the poor and needy, the sick and suffering.
I am deeply grateful to the Board of Directors, employees, volunteers, and benefactors of Catholic Charities for their generous commitment to the Church’s charitable mission. I am proud of the great good being carried out in our diocese through the many programs and activities of Catholic Charities.
The love of God revealed in Christ is our inspiration and motivation. If faith is real and authentic, it necessarily gives rise to love. We see this in the lives of the saints. We see this in our Blessed Mother, a woman of amazing faith and love. They are models for us of faith working through love.
Thank you for all you do to support Catholic Charities! May the Lord help all of us to bear witness to His goodness, kindness, and generous love!
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Kevin C. Rhoades
Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend
