Kinship care is the term used to refer to a situation in which an adult chooses to provide full-time care, nurturing, and protection for a child who is a relative (for example, a grandchild, niece, or nephew). In recent years, older adults raising their grandchildren has become an increasingly common phenomenon. Typically, grandparents have stepped in to care for grandkids because the parents are incapable of doing so due to substance abuse, mental or physical illness, incarceration, or other reasons.

Catholic Charities provides services to support such responsible individuals as they open their homes to children in their families who need stability. Resources, training, and other assistance is available through the FAKT (Foster/Adoptive/Kinship Care Training) Program.
