Kinship care is the term used to refer to a situation in which an adult chooses to provide full-time care, nurturing, and protection for a child who is a relative (for example, a grandchild, niece, or nephew). In recent years, older adults raising their grandchildren has become an increasingly common phenomenon. Typically, relatives have stepped in to care for children because the parents are incapable of or unwilling to do so due to substance abuse, mental or physical illness, incarceration, or other reasons.

Catholic Charities provides training via the FAKT Program for those caregivers who are providing or desire to provide care for a relative who has entered into the child welfare system.
