FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) - A local organization began its efforts Tuesday morning to help with the refugee crisis in Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover of Kabul.

Karen Bender with Catholic Charities left Fort Wayne Tuesday morning for Texas to assist workers with making sure that migrants have what they need to flee the region.

"I hope that people can have a little bit of peace," Bender said. "I know it's really difficult because people are leaving their families, so at least if we can get some people safety and help them out as much as we can, we just have to do what we can."

Bender said she hopes her organization can help calm refugees in the area. "It's a really bad situation for them," Bender said. "People are separated from their families, they're scared. With them coming here, I just hope that they can have peace and safety in their lives."

Bender said getting the refugees processed before they leave Afghanistan is nearly impossible with the current situation. Catholic Charities has been helping refugees since 1975 and they'll find out soon from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops if they will receive any from Afghanistan.
