A Place to Call Home

When I first met John in June 2025, he was staying at a local shelter after experiencing homelessness. From our very first conversation, one thing was clear: he was determined to build a different future. His goal was simple but life-changing—to find a safe, affordable place to call home.

John committed himself to the process. Every week, we met to talk through his progress, celebrate small victories, and tackle the challenges that stood between him and stable housing. His dedication never wavered, and I could see how much this opportunity meant to him.

As a veteran, John was eligible for additional housing resources, so together we connected with Brightpoint's veteran housing program. At the same time, he continued building on another important milestone. After struggling with substance use in the past, John had maintained his recovery since 2023. His commitment to sobriety became the foundation on which he was rebuilding his life.

While living at the shelter, John accepted a job in the laundry department. Wanting to help him move even closer to independence, I also connected him with Catholic Charities' Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). Through the program, he was able to earn a steady paycheck while gaining valuable work experience and saving money for the future he was working so hard to create.

After months of perseverance, John received wonderful news—he had been accepted into Brightpoint's veteran housing program and qualified for a housing voucher. With the voucher and the money he had carefully saved, we began searching for an apartment that would fit both his budget and his goals.

The day John received the keys to his new apartment was one I won't forget.

Together, we worked to make the apartment feel like home by connecting him with a local furniture bank for essential furnishings. What had once been an empty space soon became a place where he could rest, recover, and continue building the life he had envisioned.

Today, John is safely housed and thriving. Although he has reached the goals we established through the Journey Home Program, our relationship hasn't ended. We continue meeting regularly to support his recovery, encourage his continued growth, and ensure he has the tools to maintain the stability he has worked so hard to achieve.

John's story reminds me that ending homelessness is about much more than providing housing. It is about walking alongside someone as they rediscover their strengths, rebuild their confidence, and create a future filled with dignity and hope. Watching John unlock the door to his own home wasn't simply the end of one journey—it was the beginning of a new chapter.
